| Abstract | The primary objectives of this thesis is to learn whether the Altman Z – Score model and the Springate model can be used to predict an insurance company’s financial distress and the difference between each model. This thesis used descriptive and quantitative method with secondary data collected from insurance companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange and preceding researches’ scientific journals. This thesis used a sample of seven insurance companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange. The data is processed by the Z – score and Springate formula. This thesis used Mann – Whitney test to analyze the difference between each bankruptcy model with significant level of α<0.05 using Statistical Programs for Social Studies (SPSS). The results of this thesis describe that either Altman model or Springate model can be used to predict insurance companies’ financial distress and the difference between each model. The independent variables that affects financial distress are working capital to total assets, retained earnings to total assets, earning before interests and taxes to total assets, market values of equity to book value of total debts, earning before taxes to current liabilities, and sales to total assets. It is recommended to further research that the topic of this thesis can be continued using other bankruptcy models. Keywords : Financial Distress, Altman Z – Score, Springate S – Score |
